Biography
Beryl Reid (1919–1996) was a British actress who worked extensively in theatre, radio, film and television.
She began her career in the 1930s in summer seasons, concert parties and pantomime, later gaining prominence through BBC radio shows including Educating Archie in the 1950s. Her stage breakthrough came with the role of June 'George' Buckridge in The Killing of Sister George (1965), which she reprised in the 1968 film adaptation; she won a Tony Award for the Broadway production.
Reid received an OBE in 1985. Among her best-known screen roles were Connie Sachs in the BBC series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and its sequel Smiley's People (1982), for which she won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress. Other credits include Doctor Who (1963), Star! (1968) and The Assassination Bureau (1969).
