Biography
Camille Saint-Saëns was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era. Born in Paris on 9 October 1835, he was a child prodigy who gave his first public recital at the age of ten and studied at the Paris Conservatoire.
His best-known works include the symphonic poems Danse macabre and Le Rouet d’Omphale, the opera Samson et Dalila, the Third Symphony (Organ Symphony), the First Cello Concerto and The Carnival of the Animals. He was the first major composer to write an original score for a film, The Assassination of the Duke de Guise (1908). Saint-Saëns died in Algiers on 16 December 1921.
His music has been used in later films and television, including the finale of The Carnival of the Animals in Fantasia 2000 (2000) and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso in Your Lie in April (2014).
