Biography
Carter DeHaven was an American actor, director and producer. Born Francis O'Callaghan in Chicago, Illinois, he began his career in vaudeville in 1896 and made his Broadway debut in 1903. He entered films around 1915 and appeared in numerous comedy shorts through the early 1920s.
In the sound era DeHaven took supporting roles and worked behind the camera. He served as assistant director on Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times (1936) and as associate producer on The Great Dictator (1940), in which he also appeared as the Bacterian Ambassador (credited as Spook on some releases). Later credits include an uncredited role in The Notorious Landlady (1962) and a guest appearance as Henry in an episode of Bewitched (1964).
DeHaven received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. His daughter Gloria DeHaven was also an actress; several other family members worked in film and television.
