Biography
Charles Herbert Frend (21 November 1909 – 8 January 1977) was an English film director and editor. Born in Pulborough, Sussex, he was educated at The King's School, Canterbury and Oxford University, where he wrote film criticism for the student magazine The Isis. He began his career as an editor at British International Pictures in 1931 and later worked at Gaumont British and MGM British, editing several Alfred Hitchcock films as well as The Citadel (1938).
Frend moved into directing in the early 1940s under Michael Balcon at Ealing Studios. His notable credits as director include Scott of the Antarctic (1948) and The Cruel Sea (1953). He also directed The Long Arm (1956), which received a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, and later worked as second-unit director on Ryan's Daughter (1970).
