Biography
Christian Matras (29 December 1903 – 4 May 1977) was a French cinematographer. Born in Valence, Drôme, he began his career as a newsreel photographer before working on short films in the late 1920s and moving to feature films in the early 1930s.
He is best known for his work on Grand Illusion (1937) directed by Jean Renoir, and for his collaborations with Max Ophüls on La Ronde (1950), Le Plaisir (1952), The Earrings of Madame de... (1953) and Lola Montès (1955). Other notable credits include Cartouche (1962), Lola Montès (1955) and This Special Friendship (1964). He photographed more than one hundred feature films over four decades.
