Biography
Clair Popkin is an American cinematographer. He has worked as director of photography or camera operator on numerous documentaries and feature films, as well as commercials, music videos and television series.
Popkin grew up in Maine. He began with still photography as a child and later worked extensively in documentaries, including as cinematographer on Jim: The James Foley Story (2016). He served as one of the directors of photography on the climbing documentary Free Solo (2018), for which he shared a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program. Other credits as director of photography include STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie (2023), The Boy from Medellín (2020) and Inside Bill's Brain: Decoding Bill Gates (2019).
