Biography

Claude Whatham (7 December 1927 – 4 January 2008) was an English film and television director. He trained as an artist at Oldham Art School and began his career as a scene painter and set designer for the Oldham Repertory Company before joining Granada Television in 1956.

He directed episodes of Coronation Street (1964) and Play for Today, as well as other Granada and BBC productions including The Wednesday Play, Cider with Rosie (1971) and Elizabeth R (1971). His feature films include That'll Be the Day (1973) and Swallows and Amazons (1974). He received BAFTA nominations for his work.
