Cristian Mungiu finds suspense in the practical business of needing other people. We rate him highly for keeping his characters awkward and believable under pressure, though his insistence on making us endure their distress can become punishing.

In 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), helping a roommate means negotiating with people whose co-operation cannot be taken for granted. Cristian Mungiu follows Otilia as she helps Găbiță obtain an illegal abortion, finding suspense in what each woman needs to ask. We were frightened by the constant bargaining, because every request made clear how much they depended on somebody else. His screenplay lets the friendship remain awkward instead of turning the women into spokespeople for the subject. He lets them be difficult without suggesting that this makes their needs matter any less.
His first feature, Occident (2002), dealt with emigration and social change; 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days brought the breakthrough. Beyond the Hills (2012) takes up faith, friendship and institutional failure, while Graduation (2016) examines family and moral compromise. R.M.N. (2022) puts tensions within a Transylvanian village at the centre. The focus widens, but he keeps returning to people whose choices are limited by those around them.
His collaborators include cinematographer Oleg Mutu, and Mungiu's long takes with little camera movement give us few distractions from the characters' difficulties. In 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Mihaela Poenaru's production design keeps the surroundings ordinary. That makes the cruelty harder to dismiss as something happening in a place safely removed from everyday life. Anamaria Marinca and Laura Vasiliu keep our attention on the next practical task rather than asking us to like the women they play. Mundane absurdity and small acts of generosity matter too: Mungiu does not make everyone they encounter monstrous.
The difficulty is that Mungiu can seem determined to make every minute hurt. In 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, his prolonged scrutiny of distress sometimes continues after we have understood enough, and a little breathing space would not lessen the film's force. What makes us recommend it so firmly is how Marinca and Vasiliu keep us concerned about what the women need next. Start there, but choose an evening when being put under pressure is something you are prepared to accept.
Biography
Cristian Mungiu is a Romanian film director, screenwriter and producer. He was born on 27 April 1968 in Iași, Romania.
After studying English literature at the University of Iași, he worked as a teacher and journalist before enrolling at the University of Film in Bucharest to study directing. He graduated in 1998 and made several short films before his feature debut, Occident (2002).
Mungiu is a key figure in the Romanian New Wave. His film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), on which he also served as writer and producer, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the first for a Romanian filmmaker. Subsequent features include Beyond the Hills (2012), which won the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes, Graduation (2016), which won Best Director at Cannes, R.M.N. (2022) and Fjord (2026), which also won the Palme d'Or.
