Biography
David Cale is an English-American actor, playwright, songwriter and performance artist based in New York City. He moved to the United States from England in 1979 and began creating solo stage works that combine monologue and original music.
His plays include The Redthroats (1986), Harry Clarke (which transferred to the West End) and We're Only Alive for a Short Amount of Time. He has received Obie Awards and other theatre honours for his writing and performance.
On screen, Cale has appeared in films including Radio Days (1987), Pollock (2000), Two Lovers (2008), Private Life (2018), Vox Lux (2018) and The Testament of Ann Lee (2025), in which he played John Hocknell. He has also taken guest roles in series such as Law & Order and Russian Doll.
