Biography
David Greene (born Lucius David Syms Brian Lederman; 22 February 1921 – 7 April 2003) was a British film and television director and actor. Born in Manchester, England, he began his career as a stage actor and director in 1948, appearing in British films including The Wooden Horse (1950). He emigrated to Toronto, Canada, in 1953, where he trained in television production with the CBC, before moving to Hollywood.
Greene directed episodes of series including The Twilight Zone (1959), The Saint (1962), The Persuaders! (1971) and Ellery Queen (1975). His feature films include Godspell (1973), which he also co-wrote, and Gray Lady Down (1978). He was best known for television films and miniseries such as Roots (1977) and won three Primetime Emmy Awards for directing Rich Man, Poor Man (1976), Roots and Friendly Fire (1979). He died in Ojai, California.
