Biography
David Wayne (born Wayne James McMeekan) was an American actor and singer whose career in theatre, film and television spanned nearly five decades. He was born on 30 January 1914 in Traverse City, Michigan, and died on 9 February 1995.
Wayne began on Broadway, where he originated roles including Ensign Pulver in Mister Roberts and won two Tony Awards: Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Finian's Rainbow (1947) and Best Actor in a Play for The Teahouse of the August Moon (1953). He appeared in films such as Adam's Rib (1949), The Andromeda Strain (1971) and The Front Page (1974) as Roy Bensinger. On television he played the Mad Hatter in Batman (1966), Digger Barnes in Dallas (1978) and roles in series including The Twilight Zone, Murder, She Wrote and The Golden Girls.
