Woll plays women who have worked something out before the men around them have finished talking, and she plays them without fuss. Television has given her the long runs to prove it; film has barely asked.

Watch Deborah Ann Woll in a scene that has not given her much to do, and she is usually doing the most useful thing in it: listening. In Marvel's Daredevil (2015) her Karen Page starts as the firm's first client, becomes its secretary and ends up its conscience, and in each job she is quicker than the two lawyers who are meant to be looking after her. She does not raise her voice to get there. She waits, and then she asks the question nobody wanted asked.
The career has been a television one, and it has been built on staying put. Guest parts in 2007 and 2008 led to Jessica Hamby in True Blood (2008–2014), a recurring role that became a regular one and ran the length of the series, and critics followed her from the character's innocence into something darker. Then came Karen Page, three seasons of Daredevil with appearances in The Defenders and The Punisher, and she has since gone back to the part in Daredevil: Born Again (2025) and The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026). Film has offered less: a supporting part in Ruby Sparks (2012), and Escape Room (2019) with its sequel. Since 2019 she has also created and performed in Dungeons & Dragons actual-play series.
What works is the steadiness. Opposite Charlie Cox's bruised Matt Murdock and Elden Henson's warm, decent Foggy, she is the one who keeps the office pointed at the truth, and the writers lean on her for that more than they admit. We wrote at the time that she was better than the writing in every job the show handed her, and we would not change a word. What stayed with us was not a fight or a speech but her face in the moments when Karen has decided to keep going after something she has been told to leave alone: no defiance in it, just a woman who has stopped asking permission. It moved us more than a series about a man in a mask had any right to.
What does not work is not her fault. Daredevil ran thirteen hours for a ten-hour story, and a good deal of the padding fell on the civilians, so Woll spent stretches of screen time being competent in scenes the plot did not need. The films have asked less of her again; her cinema work so far has been supporting and ensemble parts, never the lead.
She has said she has a lot of loyalty to this character and this story, and it shows. The risk is that the loyalty becomes the whole career. Someone should write her a lead in something with no mask in it. Until they do, start with the first season of Daredevil, and watch what she does when she is not speaking.

Deborah Ann Woll is an American actress. She was born on 7 February 1985 in Brooklyn, New York City, and trained at the Packer Collegiate Institute and the USC School of Theatre, from which she graduated with a BFA in 2007. She also studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Woll is known for her role as Jessica Hamby in the HBO series True Blood (2008–2014), for which she received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. She portrayed Karen Page in the Marvel series Marvel's Daredevil (2015–2018), The Defenders (2017), Marvel's The Punisher (2017–2019) and Daredevil: Born Again (2025–present), as well as in The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026). Her film credits include Ruby Sparks (2012), Escape Room (2019) and its 2021 sequel.
She is married to comedian E. J. Scott.
