Biography

Delbert Mann was an American television and film director. He directed the 1955 film Marty, adapted from a 1953 teleplay he had also directed, and the 1958 film Separate Tables.

Mann was born in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1920. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and Yale Drama School, served in the US Army Air Corps during the Second World War, and began his career directing live television dramas before moving into feature films.

He won the Academy Award for Best Director for Marty, which also received the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Mann served as president of the Directors Guild of America from 1967 to 1971 and directed numerous other films and television productions until the 1990s. He died in Los Angeles in 2007.
