Biography
Dennis Kelly is a British writer for theatre, film and television. Born in London in 1970, he studied Drama and Theatre Arts at Goldsmiths College, University of London, graduating with a first-class degree after earlier working in retail. He began writing plays in his early thirties, with early works including Debris (2003) and DNA (2008).
On television he co-created and co-wrote the BBC Three sitcom Pulling (2006–2009) with Sharon Horgan and created and wrote the Channel 4 series Utopia (2013–2014). He also wrote an episode of Spooks (2009). His other screen credits include the screenplay for the film Black Sea (2014) and the book for the stage musical Matilda the Musical (2010), later adapted for the 2022 film. He has received BAFTA nominations and a Tony Award for his work on Matilda.
