He studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin, graduating in 1999 alongside Nina Hoss and Fritzi Haberlandt.

He has worked in theatre, film and television since the late 1990s. His film roles include appearances in Downfall (2004), The Counterfeiters (2007) as Sturmbannführer Herzog, and All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) as General Friedrichs. He played Johannes R. Becher in Fatherland (2026). Striesow also narrates audiobooks.

He has been married to his manager Ines Ganzberger since 2018. His son Ludwig Simon, from a previous relationship with actress Maria Simon, is also an actor.
