Biography

Donald Eccles (1908–1986) was a British character actor. Born Donald Yarrow Eccles in Nafferton, East Yorkshire, he was educated at Highgate School and worked briefly in an insurance office before making his stage debut in New York in 1930. His London debut followed in 1934, and he later became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. During the Second World War he served six years in the Royal Navy.

Eccles appeared in films from 1960, including A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968), The Wicker Man (1973) as T.H. Lennox, The Dresser (1983) as Mr. Godstone, A Private Function (1984) and Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) as the Reverend Duncan Nesbitt. On television he played Krasis in the Doctor Who serial The Time Monster (1972) and Pollio in I, Claudius (1976). He died in 1986 following a road accident in Brighton.
