Biography
Duane Howard is a Canadian actor of Nuu-chah-nulth descent. He is best known for playing Elk Dog in the 2015 film The Revenant. He has also appeared in Pathfinder (2007) as Elder #2, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007) as Uncle, the television series Godless (2017) as a Shoshone Brave, and The Sun at Midnight (2016).
Born in 1963 in Esperanza Inlet on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Howard spent his early childhood in Port Alberni before moving to Vancouver at the age of 14. After overcoming addiction at age 23, he worked as a substance abuse counsellor. He began acting in the early 1990s following a chance meeting with a talent agent, with early roles including walk-ons in television series such as The X-Files, Smallville and Supernatural. He has also worked as a stunt performer and performed his own stunts in The Revenant.
