Biography
Edward Anhalt (28 March 1914 – 3 September 2000) was an American screenwriter. Born in New York City, he graduated from Columbia University and began his career as a journalist and documentary filmmaker before serving in the US Army Air Force during the Second World War, where he wrote training films.
After the war he wrote screenplays, often in collaboration with his first wife Edna Anhalt. They shared the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture Story for Panic in the Streets (1950). Anhalt received a second Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Becket (1964), an adaptation of Jean Anouilh's play. His other credits include The Young Lions (1958), The Sniper (1952), Boeing, Boeing (1965), Jeremiah Johnson (1972), The Boston Strangler (1968) and Escape to Athena (1979).
