Biography

Edward de Souza is a British character actor. Born Edward James de Souza on 4 September 1932 in Hull, Yorkshire, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1957. He has worked extensively in classical theatre with companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

De Souza is known for film roles such as Sheikh Hosein in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), Harry Hunter in The Phantom of the Opera (1962) and Gerald Harcourt in The Kiss of the Vampire (1963). On television he played Sam Greenland in the sitcom After Henry (1988–1990), Collins in A Question of Attribution (1991), and Marc Cory in the Doctor Who serial Mission to the Unknown (1965). He also succeeded Valentine Dyall as the Man in Black on BBC Radio 4 from 1988 to 1992.

His other credits include appearances in The Avengers (1961), The Saint (1962), Rumpole of the Bailey (1978), Mr. Turner (2014) and The Golden Compass (2007). He has been married to actress Miranda Connell since 1960.
