Elissa Knight’s EVE is a fine piece of restrained voice acting: cautious, eager and moving without ceasing to sound like a machine. Her strongest claim on our attention is a performance built from small sounds.

In WALL·E (2008), EVE and her companion seem to be working out how much they can say to each other with the sounds available to them. Elissa Knight voices EVE opposite Ben Burtt’s WALL·E, and small variations carry eagerness, caution and the effort of being understood. We were moved by their courtship because those exchanges make that effort matter. Neither voice loses its mechanical quality. Knight gives us enough to hear a feeling without having someone explain it afterwards.
Knight’s first credited voice role was Tia in Cars (2006). Her work at Pixar included administrative support and scratch recordings, and the recordings she made as placeholders for EVE were retained for the finished film. It is a modest route to a substantial part, but there is nothing makeshift about the result. A character with so few words needs each vocal change to be clear without being overemphasised. In EVE, we can hear both the feeling and the effort to communicate it.
Director Andrew Stanton and fellow screenwriter Jim Reardon deserve credit for giving Knight and Burtt a courtship that can carry the story when almost nobody is speaking. The film’s patience makes those small vocal variations worth listening for, and the relationship gives it a clear purpose. Knight’s contribution works because the film allows us time to notice it. The later action is less distinctive, and we miss the concentration on two machines trying to make themselves understood.
Subsequent credits include additional voices in Monsters University (2013) and Inside Out (2015). She also returned to Tia in Cars Toons and related shorts through the 2010s. These smaller assignments offer less on which to base a judgement of her acting, so we would not pretend that EVE tells us everything Knight can do. Start with WALL·E, and give its quiet exchanges as much attention as its larger commotion.

Elissa Knight is an American voice actress and employee at Pixar Animation Studios. She began working at the studio as an assistant and provided scratch tracks for several films.
Her first credited voice role was as Tia in Cars (2006). She voiced EVE in WALL·E (2008), a performance originally recorded as a placeholder that was retained after electronic manipulation. Knight has also contributed additional voices to Inside Out (2015), Monsters University (2013) and other Pixar productions.
