Biography
Emi Wada was a Japanese costume designer who worked in film, theatre, opera and ballet. Born in Kyoto in 1937, she studied at Kyoto City University of Arts before beginning her career designing for stage and television productions.
She received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Akira Kurosawa’s Ran (1985) and created costumes for Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2002) and House of Flying Daggers (2004). Other notable film credits include Prospero’s Books (1991) and The Soong Sisters (1997). She also won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1993 for the opera production Oedipus Rex and received Hong Kong Film Awards for her work on Hero and The Soong Sisters.
Wada died in Japan in November 2021.
