Biography
Evan Hunter (1926–2005) was an American novelist and screenwriter. He wrote under his own name and numerous pseudonyms, most notably Ed McBain, under which he created the long-running 87th Precinct series of police procedurals.
As Evan Hunter he wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (1963). His 1959 novel King's Ransom, published as Ed McBain, was the basis for Akira Kurosawa's film High and Low (1963). He also contributed stories and characters to episodes of the television series Columbo.
Born Salvatore Albert Lombino in New York City, he legally changed his name to Evan Hunter in 1952. He graduated from Hunter College and published more than 100 novels, plays and screenplays across several genres.
