Fabrizio Rongione makes understated supporting work count, especially with Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. We value how readily he fits into their films without competing for attention, though naturalism is not his only approach.

In Two Days, One Night (2014), Fabrizio Rongione plays Manu with a restraint that leaves room for Marion Cotillard. He fits into the film's everyday exchanges without making his contribution conspicuous. We found the weekend campaign to save a factory job painfully absorbing because so much depends on each repeated conversation. Cotillard carries the distress, and Rongione's understated support helps maintain the sense of ordinary people under pressure. Giving him more to do would not necessarily make the film better.
His breakthrough as Riquet in Rosetta (1999) began an association with Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne that runs to six films through The Unknown Girl (2016). Lorna's Silence (2008) and The Kid with a Bike (2011) sit between those points. Those returns make sense for an actor whose strength is fitting into an ensemble without drawing attention to his technique. The risk is that we notice the leading performance and take the supporting work for granted.
Rongione's account of the Dardennes' method makes clear how much labour can go into an ordinary action: “With the Dardennes, at the first take you have to try something – say holding a glass – and if they like it, you have to repeat it 80 times.” The repetition allows the actor's movement and the camera to work together precisely. It also requires the actor to keep doing something familiar without making it look mechanically reproduced. The unforced quality of his work in Two Days, One Night is a good reason to take that discipline seriously.
Work with Eugène Green takes him into more stylised territory, while The First King (2019) gives him a part in an Italian historical drama. We would not make the Dardennes' naturalism a rule he ought never to break. Nor does restrained acting solve everything within it: a few encounters in Two Days, One Night feel arranged to cover every possible response. Rongione's unobtrusiveness cannot remove that sense of the script working through a list. Start with that film, but give the people around Cotillard some of your attention.
Biography
Fabrizio Rongione is a Belgian-Italian actor. Born in Brussels on 3 March 1973, he began his career on stage before appearing as Riquet in the Dardenne brothers' Rosetta (1999).
He has collaborated repeatedly with Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, appearing in The Child (2005), Lorna's Silence (2008), The Kid with a Bike (2011), Two Days, One Night (2014) as Manu, and The Unknown Girl (2016). Other notable film roles include parts in Diaz - Don't Clean Up This Blood (2012) and Happening (2021).
Rongione is also a screenwriter and film producer; he co-founded Eklektik Productions in Brussels in 2002. He hosted the Magritte Awards in 2013, 2014 and 2018.
