Biography
Frances Sternhagen was an American actress who worked in theatre, film and television for more than six decades. She appeared on and off Broadway from the 1950s and was noted as a character actress in supporting roles.
She won two Tony Awards for featured actress in a play: in 1974 for Neil Simon’s The Good Doctor and in 1995 for the revival of The Heiress. Sternhagen received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations. On screen she appeared in Outland (1981), Misery (1990) as Virginia, The Mist (2007) and Julie & Julia (2009). Her television credits include recurring roles in Cheers as Esther Clavin, Sex and the City as Bunny MacDougal and ER as Millicent Carter.
Sternhagen was born in Washington, D.C. on 13 January 1930 and died on 27 November 2023. She was married to actor Thomas A. Carlin from 1956 until his death in 1991; they had six children.
