Biography
Franco Citti (23 April 1935 – 14 January 2016) was an Italian actor. Born and raised in Rome, he worked as a painter and day labourer before being discovered by Pier Paolo Pasolini, who cast him in the title role of his debut feature Accattone (1961). The performance earned Citti a BAFTA nomination for Best Foreign Actor.
Citti appeared in six of Pasolini's films, including Mamma Roma (1962), Oedipus Rex (1967), The Decameron (1971), The Canterbury Tales (1972) as the Devil, and Arabian Nights (1974) as the Demon. He is also known to international audiences for playing the Sicilian bodyguard Calò in The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part III (1990). His brother was the director and screenwriter Sergio Citti.
