Biography
François Barbeau (1935–2016) was a Canadian costume designer. He was born in Montréal, Québec, and trained at the Cotnoir Caponi school of haute couture. He began his career in the 1950s working with Paul Buissonneau at La Roulotte and later at the Théâtre du Rideau Vert, where he designed for more than 185 productions.
Barbeau worked on over 700 productions in theatre, film, dance, opera and circus in Canada and abroad. His film credits include Kamouraska (1973), Atlantic City (1980), Léolo (1992) and Laurence Anyways (2012). He taught at the National Theatre School of Canada and the Université du Québec à Montréal. He received the Governor General's Award in 1996 and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2000.
