Biography

Gabriele Binder is a German costume designer. Born on 17 February 1961, she studied design and art history at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin. She began working in film in the mid-1980s as an assistant and took on her first full costume design credits from 1994.

Binder is known for her work on films including The Lives of Others (2006), for which she received a German Film Award nomination, In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011), Never Look Away (2018) and Young Woman and the Sea (2024). She has collaborated repeatedly with director Sherry Hormann. On television she designed costumes for the Netflix series The Queen's Gambit (2020), winning a Primetime Emmy and a Costume Designers Guild Award.

She is married to the artist Boris Ivandic and operates the costume repository COMMEdesCOSTUMES in Berlin.
