Biography
Gavin Millar (11 January 1938 – 20 April 2022) was a Scottish film and television director, critic and presenter. Born in Clydebank, he was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, undertook national service in the Royal Air Force, and read English at Christ Church, Oxford. He later took a postgraduate film course at the Slade School of Fine Art.
Millar worked as a film critic for The Listener from 1970 to 1984 and contributed to Sight and Sound and the London Review of Books. He presented Arena Cinema for the BBC and wrote a section for the 1968 edition of Karel Reisz's The Technique of Film Editing. His directing credits include episodes of Play for Today (from 1970), the Dennis Potter play Cream in My Coffee (1980), Talking Heads (1988), Pat and Margaret (1994), The Crow Road (1996) and episodes of Foyle's War (2002 onwards).
His feature films as director include Dreamchild (1985). He also directed an episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992) and collaborated with Victoria Wood on several projects.
