Biography

George Gershwin was an American composer and pianist. Born Jacob Gershwine in New York City on 26 September 1898, he died in Los Angeles on 11 July 1937.

His compositions, often written with his brother Ira, were used in numerous films. These include the original score for Shall We Dance (1937) and, after his death, the songs and music for An American in Paris (1951), Ziegfeld Follies (1945), The Barkleys of Broadway (1949), Funny Face (1957) and Kiss Me, Stupid (1964).
