Biography
Georgia Backus, also credited as Georgia Belden Backus, was an American character actress who worked on stage, radio and screen. She appeared in supporting roles, often uncredited, in around 30 films during the 1940s and 1950s, including Citizen Kane (1941) as Miss Anderson and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) as Matron.
She began her career in stock theatre and on Broadway before moving into radio, where she acted, wrote and directed. In 1930 she was appointed dramatic director of CBS. She later joined Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre repertory company for radio productions. Her film career ended after she was named during 1950s congressional investigations into communism in Hollywood.
