Biography
Gill Dennis (1941–2015) was an American screenwriter, director and teacher. He graduated in 1971 from the first class of the AFI Conservatory, alongside filmmakers including Terrence Malick and David Lynch, and later served as Master Filmmaker-in-Residence there. He also taught at CalArts.
His screenwriting credits include Return to Oz (1985), On My Own (1991), Riders of the Purple Sage (1996) and the Oscar-nominated Walk the Line (2005), which he co-wrote with director James Mangold. He also wrote and directed Without Evidence (1995) and contributed uncredited work to The Black Stallion (1979).
Dennis was married first to actress Elizabeth Hartman (divorced 1984) and later to Kristen Peckinpah Dennis; he had two sons. He died in Portland, Oregon, aged 74.
