Biography
Giorgos Arvanitis (also credited as Yorgos Arvanitis) is a Greek cinematographer. He was born on 22 February 1941 in Dilofo, Phthiotis, Greece. After training as an electrician, he entered the film industry in his early twenties, progressing from camera assistant to director of photography.
Arvanitis began a long collaboration with director Theo Angelopoulos in 1968 on the short film Εκπομπή (Broadcast), and worked on many of Angelopoulos's subsequent features, including The Travelling Players (1975), Landscape in the Mist (1988) and Eternity and a Day (1998). He has also photographed films by other directors such as Catherine Breillat (Fat Girl, 2001; Anatomy of Hell, 2004) and Jonathan Nossiter (Signs & Wonders, 2001). In 1989 he received the Golden Osella for Best Cinematography at the Venice Film Festival for Australia.
He relocated to France in 1989 and has worked with international directors including Volker Schlöndorff, the Dardenne brothers, Marco Bellocchio and Agnieszka Holland.
