Biography
Granville Bates was an American character actor and bit player who appeared in over ninety films between 1917 and 1940.
Born in Chicago, he began his screen career with the Essanay Studios there in the 1910s. He later worked on Broadway in productions including the original Twentieth Century (1932) and Merrily We Roll Along (1934).
From the 1930s he took supporting roles in numerous Hollywood films, among them The Smiling Lieutenant (1931), The Plainsman (1936), Of Mice and Men (1939) and My Favorite Wife (1940). He died in Hollywood in 1940.
