Biography

Hanna Schygulla is a German actress and chanson singer. Born on 25 December 1943 in Chorzów, Poland, she trained in Munich and began her career in the 1960s.

She is best known for her extensive collaborations with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, appearing in 23 of his films and television works between 1969 and 1982. These include The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972), The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979), for which she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress, Lili Marleen (1981) and the miniseries Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980). She also received the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for The Story of Piera (1983).

Schygulla has worked with numerous international directors and continues to appear in films, including a role as Martha von Kurtzroc in Poor Things (2023).
