Biography
Harry Andrews (1911–1989) was an English actor. He trained for the stage and made his London theatre debut in 1935 at the St James's Theatre, followed by his New York debut the next year. He appeared in Shakespearean productions at venues including the Old Vic and the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre.
Andrews made his film debut in The Red Beret (1953) and went on to appear in more than eighty films, often in roles as tough military officers. Notable credits include The Hill (1965), Ice Cold in Alex (1958), 55 Days at Peking (1963), Battle of Britain (1969), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) as Grand Duke Nicholas, Theatre of Blood (1973), Death on the Nile (1978) and Superman (1978). He received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Hill and was appointed CBE in 1966 for services to drama.
