Biography
Harry Edwards is an American sociologist and civil rights activist. Born on 22 November 1942 in East St. Louis, Illinois, he earned a PhD from Cornell University and is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley.
Edwards' work has centred on the experiences of African-American athletes. He is regarded as a founder of the sociology of sport and was the architect of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, which led to the 1968 Black Power salute by Tommie Smith and John Carlos.
He has appeared as himself in the documentary O.J.: Made in America (2016) and in the film High Flying Bird (2019). Edwards has also consulted for professional sports teams including the San Francisco 49ers and Golden State Warriors.
