Biography
Hendrik Sartov (also credited as Hendrick or Henrik Sartov) was a Danish-born cinematographer. Born Hendrik Christian Sartov on 14 March 1885 in Haderslev, Denmark, he emigrated to the United States in 1907 and initially worked as a portrait photographer.
In 1917 Lillian Gish recommended him to director D. W. Griffith, after which he contributed to several Griffith silent films. His credits include cinematography on Way Down East (1920) and Orphans of the Storm (1921), as well as Broken Blossoms (1919) and later titles such as The Scarlet Letter (1926). He became a naturalised US citizen in 1926.
Sartov largely retired from cinematography with the advent of sound films and returned to still photography. He died on 21 March 1970 in Glendale, California.
