Biography
Hermann Warm was a German film art director and production designer. Born in Berlin, he trained in stage design in Düsseldorf and at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Berlin, and worked as a theatrical designer and painter before entering the film industry around 1912–13.
He became a key figure in German expressionist cinema of the 1920s. Warm collaborated with Walter Reimann and Walter Röhrig on the painted, distorted sets for Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). He worked on several Fritz Lang films, including Destiny (1921), and with F. W. Murnau on Phantom (1922) and Schloss Vogelöd (1921). He also contributed to Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and Vampyr (1932).
During the Second World War Warm lived in Switzerland and returned to Germany in 1947. He continued working on films until the late 1950s, including Wozzeck (1947).
