Biography
Hugh Anthony Glanmor Williams (6 March 1904 – 7 December 1969) was an English actor and dramatist. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and appeared in his first film, Charley's Aunt, in 1930 while in Hollywood. He became a mainstay of British cinema in the 1930s, making dozens of film appearances between 1930 and 1967.
Williams is known for roles including James Steerforth in David Copperfield (1935), Hindley Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights (1939), Frank Shelley in One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942), and Lord Hartington in Khartoum (1966). He also wrote the screenplay for The Grass Is Greener (1960), on which he collaborated with his second wife, the actress Margaret Vyner. During the Second World War he served as a captain in the GHQ Liaison Regiment.
