Biography

Ion Sapdaru is a Romanian actor and theatre director. He was born on 4 August 1961 in Doroțcaia, Moldova. He graduated from the Theatre Faculty in Chișinău in 1983 and the VGIK Film Faculty in Moscow in 1989.

Since 1990 he has worked as an actor and director at the Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre in Iași. His film roles include Tiberiu Mănescu in 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006), for which he received the Gopo Award for Best Actor, Dr Rusu in 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), a border guard in The Whistleblower (2010), the captain in Beyond the Hills (2012), and Comrade Vârtosu in The New Year That Never Came (2024). He is also credited as a playwright and screenwriter.
