Fi1m perspective

Ione Skye gives quieter characters enough warmth and steadiness to stand beside more demonstrative leads. In Say Anything..., she earns our affection without matching John Cusack's comic force, though she cannot make up for everything the writing leaves out.

Beside John Cusack's anxious Lloyd in Say Anything... (1989), Ione Skye lets Diane Court be quiet without making her disappear. Her steadiness gives him something to play against, and she does not strain to compete with his comic energy. We warmed to Diane because that calm makes her seem like someone worth getting to know, rather than simply someone Lloyd wants. Cameron Crowe gets much of the romance's warmth from this difference between the performances.

But Crowe gives Lloyd enough personality to imagine him outside the romance, while Diane is too often defined by what she means to other people. Skye keeps her from becoming merely a reward for his persistence, but cannot supply a whole independent life that the screenplay has left out. We want more of Diane because the performance has made her worth watching. The film remains an easy recommendation for its humour and generosity; the thinness of her writing is a substantial reservation.

Her debut as Clarissa in River's Edge (1986) placed her in teenage drama before Diane brought wider recognition. The 1990s took her into Allison Anders's independent feature Gas Food Lodging (1992) and the broader comedy of Wayne's World (1992). The less comfortable casting of Dream for an Insomniac (1998) supplies a caveat: her warmth does not make every piece of lighter material a natural fit.

Later supporting parts include Fever Pitch (2005) and David Fincher's Zodiac (2007), with television also becoming a continuing strand of her work. We would start with Diane rather than those smaller appearances: Skye has the space there to make quietness count for something. She holds her place beside Cusack without trying to become the louder actor. For another role of that size, we would welcome a writer willing to give her more of the conversation.
