Biography
Ivan Dixon was an American actor and director. Born Ivan Nathaniel Dixon III on 6 April 1931 in Harlem, New York, he studied drama at North Carolina Central University. He began his career on stage, appearing in the original Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun (1959) and its 1961 film adaptation.
Dixon is best known for playing Staff Sergeant James 'Kinch' Kinchloe in the sitcom Hogan's Heroes (1965–1970). He also starred in the independent film Nothing But a Man (1964) and received an Emmy nomination for the television drama The Final War of Olly Winter (1967). From the 1970s he worked extensively as a television director on series including The Waltons, The Rockford Files (nine episodes, 1975–1979), Magnum, P.I. and The A-Team, as well as feature films such as Trouble Man (1972) and The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973). He died on 16 March 2008 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
