Izabella Scorupco is persuasive as women with a practical skill and the nerve to use it. We like her unforced confidence in GoldenEye, though the film’s attempts at emotional weight are less convincing than its action.

Scorupco’s Natalya Simonova is a computer expert in GoldenEye (1995), and her knowledge gives her a useful place beside Bond. It is a good fit for an actor whose strongest quality is making capable women seem believable without labouring the point. We warmed to Natalya because she has expertise Bond needs, and Scorupco makes that competence easy to believe. The attraction is straightforward: we want to spend time with someone who can contribute when things become difficult.
Martin Campbell’s direction supplies the brisk action, while Pierce Brosnan makes a persuasive Bond. The film knows that Bond’s old habits need questioning, and a resourceful ally is a sensible person to put beside him. Its attempts to give him more emotional weight are less convincing, and Scorupco’s presence does not remove that reservation. We recommend it for the pace and the working partnership, with no need to pretend it is a searching character study.
GoldenEye was her international breakthrough, but With Fire and Sword (1999), in which she plays Helena Kurcewiczówna, took her into Polish historical drama. Vertical Limit (2000) returned her to Hollywood action as Monique Aubertine. The helicopter pilot Alex Jensen in Reign of Fire (2002) is particularly characteristic casting: another woman whose practical knowledge matters. Her credibility in physically demanding action helps those parts, although the repeated emphasis on resourcefulness also suggests how narrowly such films can use her.
Renny Harlin’s horror prequel Exorcist: The Beginning (2004) cast her as Sarah Novak, taking this run of genre work into horror. The later work has been more selective, including the Swedish television series Barracuda Queens (2023). We would welcome a role that lets her capable woman get something badly wrong and gives Scorupco time to play the consequences. Start with GoldenEye if an entertaining action film is what the evening needs.
Biography
Izabella Scorupco is a Polish-Swedish actress, model and singer. Born Izabela Dorota Skorupko on 4 June 1970 in Białystok, Poland, she moved with her mother to Stockholm, Sweden, in 1978.
She began her career as a model in the late 1980s and made her film debut in the Swedish drama Ingen kan älska som vi (1988). In the early 1990s she released a gold-certified pop album in Sweden. Scorupco is best known for her role as Natalya Simonova in the James Bond film GoldenEye (1995). Subsequent credits include Vertical Limit (2000), Reign of Fire (2002) and Exorcist: The Beginning (2004).
