Biography
Jack B. Sowards (1929–2007) was an American screenwriter and television writer. He wrote the screenplay for the feature film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 'Where Silence Has Lease' (1988). He created the term 'Kobayashi Maru' for the film.
Sowards studied at the University of Texas, Austin. His television credits include episodes of The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones, Bonanza (where he also served as story editor), The High Chaparral and Daniel Boone. He received a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for an episode of The Bold Ones: The Lawyers.
Sowards was nominated for a Saturn Award and shared a Hugo Award nomination for his work on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. He later taught screenwriting at UCLA. He died in Valley Village, California, from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
