Biography
James Gammon was an American character actor known for his portrayals of grizzled, rustic figures in film and television. Born in Newman, Illinois, he began his career in the 1960s after working as a television cameraman, appearing in westerns and making his film debut in Cool Hand Luke (1967).
He is recognised for his role as baseball manager Lou Brown in Major League (1989) and Major League II (1994), and as Nick Bridges in the television series Nash Bridges (1996–2001). Gammon provided voices for The Iron Giant (1999) and appeared in films including Cold Mountain (2003), Appaloosa (2008) and Wyatt Earp (1994). He was also active in theatre, earning a Tony Award nomination for Buried Child.
Gammon died in Costa Mesa, California, in 2010.
