Biography
James Goldman (1927–1998) was an American playwright and screenwriter. He wrote the play The Lion in Winter (1966) and its 1968 film adaptation, for which he received an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
His other screenplays include They Might Be Giants (1971), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Robin and Marian (1976) and White Nights (1985). He wrote the book for the musical Follies (1971) with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and collaborated with his brother, screenwriter William Goldman, on several stage works. Some later credits, including the miniseries Queenie (1987), appeared under the name Winston Beard. He was born in Chicago and died in New York City.
