Biography
James Murray (9 February 1901 – 11 July 1936) was an American film actor. Born in the Bronx, New York City, he moved to Hollywood in 1924 and worked initially as an extra. Director King Vidor cast him in the lead role of John 'Johnny' Sims in the 1928 silent film The Crowd after spotting him on the MGM lot.
Murray's performance in The Crowd received critical praise. He appeared in a total of 36 films, including Rose-Marie (1928) and Lon Chaney vehicles such as The Big City (1928) and Thunder (1929). In later sound-era productions his roles were mostly uncredited bit parts, among them a brakeman in Baby Face (1933) and an earthquake survivor in San Francisco (1936). He died by drowning in New York City at the age of 35.
