Biography

James Otis (1948–2020) was an American actor. Born James Patrick Otis in Stamford, Connecticut, he graduated from Stamford Catholic High School in 1966 and from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, with a drama degree in 1970. He began his career in the 1970s with stage performances, including Off-Broadway in New York, and later appeared for several seasons at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago as the Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol.

Otis had supporting roles in films including The Black Dahlia (2006) as Dolph Bleichert and The Prestige (2006) as Blind Stagehand 1. On television he appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1999) as Solbor, The X-Files (2001) as Arlen Sacks, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2003) as Reverend Mitchell Shaw, ER (2005) as Arnold Brixton, Criminal Minds (2007) as Dr Nash and Supernatural (2010) as Famine. He moved to Glendale, California, in the 1990s and served twice on the Academy Award Nominating Committee.
