Jamie Bamber's Lee 'Apollo' Adama keeps us at a slight distance in Battlestar Galactica (2004), especially beside Katee Sackhoff's rougher Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace. His guardedness helps distinguish Lee within a cast already well supplied with difficult company. We warmed to Lee more slowly than to Starbuck, because Bamber's guarded manner makes him harder to approach. That is part of the performance's appeal, and a useful contribution to the series' atmosphere of suspicion.
The early roles suggest how readily he fits into a uniform: Archie Kennedy in Hornblower (1998), then Jack E. Foley in Band of Brothers (2001). Lee was the breakthrough, beginning with the 2003 miniseries before the series followed in 2004. Law & Order: UK (2009) subsequently cast him as DS Matt Devlin. The move from military settings to police work kept him close to men with duties and hierarchies to negotiate. It is a casting pattern that makes sense for an actor whose reserve can suggest the effort of staying professional.
Edward James Olmos, playing Lee's father, is the crucial collaborator in that central performance. In Ronald D. Moore's series, the father-son tension gives Bamber's reserve a more personal cause than professional discipline alone. His chemistry with Olmos makes that guarded manner worth watching: there is a family relationship to attend to alongside the demands of leadership. We would rather see him working through those competing demands than ask him to match the more conspicuous personalities around him.
The limitation is that Battlestar Galactica can be wearingly gloomy, and Bamber does little to lighten it. Sackhoff's roughness and James Callis's nervous energy as Gaius Baltar offer more immediate changes of pace. We would not want everyone in the ensemble to be as guarded as Bamber, but the differences between them help sustain the drama. His restraint deserves credit without being mistaken for the whole programme's achievement. Start with Lee, provided an evening of tense, prickly company sounds like a pleasure.

Jamie Bamber, born Jamie St John Bamber Griffith on 3 April 1973 in Hammersmith, London, is a British actor. He was educated at St Paul's School, graduated with a first in modern languages from St John's College, Cambridge, and trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Bamber is known for his role as Lee 'Apollo' Adama in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica (2004–2009), which began with a 2003 miniseries. Other television credits include DS Matt Devlin in Law & Order: UK (2009–2011), 2nd Lt. Jack Foley in the miniseries Band of Brothers (2001), and Lieutenant Archie Kennedy in the Hornblower series. He has also appeared in guest roles on series such as House, Ghost Whisperer and Dollhouse.
He is married to actress Kerry Norton.
