Biography
Jay McCarrol (born 9 August 1983) is a Canadian composer, musician, screenwriter and actor. Based in Toronto, he has scored all of director Matt Johnson’s feature films, including The Dirties (2013), Operation Avalanche (2016), BlackBerry (2023) and Tony (2026). He also composed the scores for The Kid Detective (2020) and Hell of a Summer (2025).
McCarrol co-created the web series Nirvanna the Band the Show with Johnson and starred in its television adaptation and the 2025 feature film continuation. He won Canadian Screen Awards for Best Original Score for BlackBerry (2024) and, for the Nirvanna feature, Best Lead Performance in a Comedy Film and Best Original Song (both 2026). He is a member of the synth-pop band Brave Shores with his sister Stefanie.
